The FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar is a human rights disaster of epic proportions - from the 6,500+ migrant workers who died building the spectacle, to the arrest, persecution, and beating of LGBTQ+ people.
In response, Rodrigo Peñalosa and I created this self-initiated short film to expose the realities behind the tournament’s glossy facade.
By subverting the visual language and tropes of the beloved Panini sticker album, the film highlights the brutal commodification of migrant labour - workers who make up over 90% of Qatar’s population - reframing football’s culture of collectability as a record of human loss.
Designed and produced as a real, physical sticker album - complete with holographic “shinies” - each card replaces football stats with a migrant worker’s country of origin and cause of death.
Conceived as an album that continues to grow, the project uses nostalgia and familiarity as a weapon, asking what - and who - global spectacle depends on, and how easily violence disappears when entertainment looks this good.
